Plot Summary
The narrative unfolds through a flashback, beginning with a murder on a rainy night. The story revolves around a gang of five men—Vikram, Seshadri, Shardul, Prakash, and Shiva—who run a gambling club and engage in illicit deals. They plan a lucrative drug deal, each contributing ₹50 lakh to purchase contraband worth ₹5 crore. Shiva is assigned to transport the money to Bengaluru by train.
Vikram, secretly involved with Shardul’s wife Mini and aspiring to flee to Canada with her, devises a plan to steal the money by incapacitating Shiva during the journey. However, the plan goes awry, leading to Shiva’s death. As the other gang members start uncovering the betrayal, Vikram eliminates them one by one to cover his tracks. Ultimately, he meets his end at the hands of Varsha, Prakash’s wife, who mistakes him for Shardul, believing he was responsible for her husband’s death.

Inspirations and Adaptations
“Johnny Gaddaar” is an uncredited adaptation of the 1962 French novel Les Mystifiés by Alain Reynaud-Fourton, which was first adapted into the 1963 French film Symphonie pour un massacre by Jacques Deray. Director Sriram Raghavan acknowledged reading the novel during his tenure at ISRO. The film pays homage to classic thrillers, notably Vijay Anand’s Johny Mera Naam and the works of James Hadley Chase, with characters seen reading Chase’s novels and scenes referencing Anand’s films.
